Pictet & Cie* supports the fight
against malaria

This unique concert could not take place without the financial support provided by Banque Pictet & Cie on the occasion of its 200th anniversary. The Geneva based private bank wants to contribute to the fight against malaria and help build public awareness of the disease: a humanitarian cause mainly affecting children, pregnant women and people in emergency situations. Banque Pictet & Cie joins several international organisations in Geneva and the Fondation pour Genève to offer this exceptional concert to the Geneva public.

Every 30 seconds in Africa, a child dies of malaria. This astonishingly high figure is all the more horrifying that many of these deaths could be avoided thanks to low-cost methods of prevention. Low from the point of view of the developed world at least, which now spends only a fraction of the US$3 billion needed to fight the disease effectively in Africa. Meanwhile, malaria costs the continent US$12 billion a year. Indeed, with 90% of worldwide cases, Africa is the worst-hit continent, leading to an economically unsustainable situation and causing useless suffering for countless struggling families.

To commemorate its bicentennial anniversary, Pictet & Cie wanted to show its solidarity for a campaign that can and must be waged at a global level. It can be, because the investment required is reasonable: at a cost of two to five dollars, an insecticide-treated mosquito net can save the life of one child. It must be, because we may no longer stand by while entire populations suffer, or dismiss malaria as a local problem. International public opinion must be raised, and awareness built through the media, thanks to events like the concert of October 8th and the involvement of artists like Youssou N’Dour.

For all these reasons, Pictet & Cie opted to show its commitment to a cause where it could help make a difference by providing financial support for the concert of October 8th. And this is why Pictet & Cie also would like to thank you for taking a stand: attend the concert, tell your friends about it and learn more about malaria. For Geneva to live up to its international reputation, we can no longer focus only on the problems that affect us directly, we must also become more attentive and involved with the issues and the suffering that affect the world.
