Axelle Red

Date of birth: February 15, 1968 in Hasselt, Belgium.

Musical style: soul

Axelle Red, the queen of French soul, equally in love with words and rhythms, is an artist who wants people to dance to her songs. She is one those curious figures who epitomize the Belgian paradox: an English-speaking Flemish woman who found her voice by singing in French. Axelle definitively asserts herself as singer-songwriter, composing or co-writing the lyrics and music for all her songs. She’s one of Europe's few credible soul singers, a head-turner who can be unpredictable, imperious, and almost exotic.

Personality:
Her friends say Axelle Red is quick and vivacious. This delicate and gentle woman, adored by her fans, is the antithesis of a manufactured star. She’s always known what she wants and how to get it.

As an activist, Axelle is determined to make things move if the world doesn’t go round as it should. As a qualified lawyer, she’s ready to defend the victims of the world’s injustices.

Commitments:
Axelle Red is involved in a number of humanitarian causes. As a UNICEF goodwill ambassador for Belgium since 1997, she often visits Asia and has naturally supported UNICEF’s campaigns on behalf of the children of Laos. As a diligent field reporter for the organisation, she has put forward a series of proposals for Laotian children, including action on malnutrition, health care and anti-personnel mines.

In March 1998, she went to Haiti for a campaign on behalf of the country’s children launched by UNICEF’s Belgian committee. She particularly supports the education programme for children who cannot go to school.

On October 8, 2005, Axelle Red will sing in the United against Malaria concert, Youssou N'Dour & Friends, at the Arena, Geneva.
